The Norwegian capital lies between the Oslo Fjord and the green hills of Oslomarka. The city was established as a municipality on the 3rd of January 1838. The present population of the town is 560,484 out of which 25% are immigrants. The city is picturesque with green hills encircling all around. There are 40 island within the city limits, the largest being Malmoya. Oslo has a humid/continental climate with temperatures ranging from 68.2 °F and 70.7 °F during the summer months. During the winter months the temperature drops down to -4.0 °F
The public transport system in Oslo is managed by the Municipal Transport Company Oslo Sporveier. The modes of transport in the city are tram, buses, metro and ferry. Depending upon the requirements one can use the preferred mode. For the residents of the city there are various good schools, hospitals and recreation centers. Schools include Stovner High School, Kastellet School and the Lambertseter School. For their higher education students can opt for courses in the University of Oslo. Among the hospitals, the Aker University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Norway. It was founded in the year 1895. Norwegian Radium Hospital, dedicated to cancer treatment is another famous hospital in the Norwegian capital.
Oslo is a center for sports and recreation. The 1952 Winter Olympics were organized here. There are many options for tourists and residents in winter sports. Just like any other modern capital city, Oslo also has its share of malls and business centers but on a lesser number compared to its European counterparts.
